Lake Norman is not only the northern part of Charlotte (20 miles to be exact) but three unique towns with great places to get out on the water, green spaces and parks, a rich history, and excellent shopping. Lake Norman is an easy stop off of I-77 right in the heart of NASCAR country. Why not stretch your legs here in this area named for the former Duke Power (Energy) president and have a tasty meal or do some shopping to rest your bones a bit?
Here are some things you should know about visiting Lake Norman, North Carolina, home of the largest man-made lake boasting 520 miles of shoreline.
When offering an assessment of the first six months since the Glen Helen Association assumed ownership of the Glen Helen Nature Preserve, Executive Director Nick Boutis was reflective.
A friends group of donors, advocates and the volunteers who have supported the Glen for 60 years, the Glen Helen Association has, in the last six months, “stepped into the role of the owner, the operator, the governing board of Glen Helen, all within a global pandemic that forced the shutdown of all of our educational programs,” Boutis said.
Recalling the events of the past year in which the Covid-19 global pandemic almost forced the closure of the nature preserve deeply loved by the community, Boutis laid out the picture from a year ago.
Snowy owl rescued from I-494 in December released back into wild
He was found by a Richfield plow driver.

The owl, a two-year-old male, was found injured along the I-494 in Richfield back in December.
Per FOX 9, a city plow driver saw the bird stuck near the median and reached out to a naturalist at the Wood Lake Nature Center, who quickly arrived to help rescue the bird.

According to a Friday Facebook update from the city of Richfield (above), the owl was taken to the U of M s Raptor Center for medical treatment and rehab, eventually being set free at the Sherburne National Wildlife Sanctuary.
Auburn fans will get a chance to see the new-look Tigers take the field on Saturday during the first A-Day game of the Bryan Harsin era.Â
The A-Day game will kick off at 1 p.m. Saturday in Jordan-Hare Stadium, with capacity reduced to 40 percent. Tickets are $10 and available in groups of two or four socially-distanced pods. All tickets will be digital.
Fans will be required to wear face coverings when entering and exiting the stadium and in public spaces, and are encouraged to wear them when seated.Â
Tailgating or RVs will not be allowed on campus, although there are a few opportunities for fans to experience somewhat normal pregame activities, including two Wing Fling exhibits at the Southeastern Raptor Center at 4 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday. The Raptor Center is located at 1350 Pratt-Carden Drive.Â
