Randwick Council urged to drop transphobic policy on ocean pool

Activists believe that this is a breach of bodily autonomy and they want council reverse its decision. The MLB website responded to the protest by saying it had taken note, adding that “our definition for transgender is as per the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977”.  The problem, however, is that the law in New South Wales excludes those transgender people who have not had gender reassignment surgery for many reasons, including expense. For example, breast augmentation can cost up to $10,000. The procedure to remove testes also costs this much. Hormone replacement therapy and other costs connected to transitioning can mount up to $85,000.  Medicare still only covers transgender surgeries on a case-by-case basis, and not all trans people want to undertake surgery.

Nippers blow up at Greens plan to REMOVE shark nets in Sydney

A surf life saving club has slammed a plan to remove shark nets at some of Sydney s most popular beaches - just one day after a 394.5kg beast was hauled off the coast.  Greens Councillor Lindsay Shurey wants Randwick Council moved a motion to phase out the shark meshing program at local beaches, including Coogee and Maroubra, in the city s eastern suburbs.  Ms Shurey said other marine mammals, turtles and fish become trapped in the nets and she believes there are othre alternatives to keep sharks away from beachgoers.  While the councillor s motion was rejected by Liberal councillor Brendan Roberts and NSW Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall, the South Maroubra Surf Lifesaving Club has also joined the criticism.
