In an announcement that could dramatically alter political alignments in Tamil Nadu, superstar Rajinikanth on Sunday announced his political debut and said he will launch his own party which will contest all 234 constituencies in the next assembly polls in the state.
The announcement ends two decades of speculation over the entry of the actor, who enjoys cult status in Tamil cinema, in the political arena.
Breaking his silence on the issue a day after the video was released by a loyalist, Dhinakaran claimed that top functionaries of the ruling AIADMK, including chief minister K Palaniswami, were aware of the existence of the video.

A number of constituencies in Chennai district reported a delay in counting because of glitches in EVMs on Sunday. The average time taken for counting was more than 45 minutes for each round in some constituencies. The Chennai District Election Office deployed several engineers to resolve issues reported during the counting process.
Counting was delayed in Royapuram Assembly constituency, with just 20 rounds, because of glitches in the EVMs. Counting started at 8 a.m. and was completed in the constituency only after 11 p.m.
