Tax credit for foster parents becomes law with Gov Parson s signature

Missourians who adopt or foster children are getting some help on their future taxes. The first concession will allow a foster parent who provides care for at least six months to deduct up $2,500 in foster care expenses. A married couple doing the same could deduct up to $5,000. The second break will allow Missourians adopting any child to claim a tax credit of up to $10,000 for adoption-related expenses. That tax credit is currently only available to parents adopting children with special needs who are residents or wards of residents of the state at the time of adoption. Both breaks are set to take effect at the beginning of next year, meaning the first time parents will be able to claim them will be on the taxes they file in 2023.
