Rohingya refugee crisis: UNHCR team in Jammu to assess ground situation

Representational Image  |  Photo Credit: IANS Jammu: Concerned over brewing Rohingya refugee crisis, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representatives, today came down rushing to Jammu, to meet RohangiyaMuslims to have an assessment of the situation on the ground. Four member team of UNHCR representatives led by one Kiri Attri External Relation Officer visited  KiryaniTalab and adjoining areas of Bathindi in Jammu outskirts. The said team interacted with some of the Rohingyas and inquired about their wellbeing. Besides this, the representatives of UNHCR also met the chairman of one of the local NGO - Save the Children - located at KiryaniTalab, Bathindi.

168 Rohingyas living illegally in Jammu sent to jail, say Officials

Authorities here have sent 168 Rohingyas to jail after they were found living illegally in the city, officials said on Sunday. The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday had began a drive to collect biometric and other details of Rohingyas staying here. The drive is part of an exercise to trace foreigners living in the city without valid documents. At least 168 illegal immigrant Rohingyas have been sent to Hiranagar jail, a senior police officer told PTI. The verification process of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar was carried out at the MAM Stadium here amid high security, the officials said, adding further verification of the foreigners is going on, they added.

Indian Coast Guard found boat carrying Rohingya refugees; 8 dead: MEA

The Indian coast guard has found a boat adrift in the Andaman Sea carrying Rohingya refugees, including eight people who had died, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday. Speaking at a videoconference briefing, spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said that on February 11, a boat sailed from Cox s Bazar in Bangladesh carrying 64 women including 8 girls and 26 men including 5 boys. The engine of the boat failed on February 15 and since then it has been drifting. Due to the severe conditions, we understand that eight occupants have died and one of the occupants had been missing since February 15, Srivastava said. When we learnt of the boat in distress, we immediately dispatched two coast guard ships to provide food, water and medical assistance to the occupants. Seven of them were administered IV fluids, he added.
