Poland Proposes Advertising Revenues Levy WARSAW: The Polish government has proposed a levy on advertising revenues aimed mainly at multinationals operating in Poland that pay only a small fraction of their revenues in the form of corporate income tax. The tax will not apply to smaller, local or regional media. The new tax on advertising revenues would bring in and estimated 800 PLN / 180 m EUR annually. The levy will not apply to small media entities earning less than 3.3 m EUR / 15 m EUR per year from advertising. The controversial new tax which is still awaiting final approval is slated to enter into force in July 2021.

In an effort to ensure the highest quality in terms of programming and organization we are planning for this year s event to be a hybrid edition - cinema screenings will of course be the heart of the festival, but some films will be available online. Due to the still serious pandemic, many international spring festivals are changing their dates. Cannes is one of them, and this year it will be held in July, very close to our festival s originally planned date. Since the Cannes festival significantly influences the New Horizons program and its industry events (including Polish Days), we decided to hold our festival a little later. Bulgarian Cash Rebate Passes Second Parliamentary Vote SOFIA: Bulgaria’s cash rebate for film production passed its second Parliamentary vote on 17 February 2021. The vote took place nearly a month later than originally scheduled, following a series of intense public debates between MPs from the Parliamentary Committee on Culture and the Media, the Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers, numerous film associations, film directors and experts. The new legislation will also provide substantial increases in support for Bulgarian film production. The initial amendments to the country’s 2003 Film Industry Act are intended to divide the total amount of public support of nearly 20 m EUR into two main schemes: one, dedicated to the national film industry and the second to the foreign producers who shoot in Bulgaria. As a start, 8 m EUR are envisaged to finance the 25% cash rebate.

photo: Dobos Tamas BUDAPEST: The first feature of Hungarian director Dénes Nagy, Natural light / Természetes fény has been invited to the Main Competition of the 71st Berlin International Film Festival, which opens on 1 March 2021. The film is a Hungarian/Latvian/French/German coproduction. This is the first time two Hungarian films will compete for the Golden Bear. Bence Flieaguf’s Forest - I See You Everywhere also screens at the Berlinale. Ildikó Enyedi’s romantic drama On Body and Soul / Testről és lélekről was the last Hungarian feature participating in the Main Competition, winning the main prize in 2017.
