FESTIVALS: Polish/Swedish Sweat Competes at 2021 Trieste FF

TRIESTE: The sophomore drama from Magnus von Horn, the Polish/Swedish coproduction Sweat, will screen in the main competition of the 32nd Trieste Film Festival, which runs 21 – 30 January 2021 and focuses on films from the CEE, Baltic and Balkan region The film recounts three days in the life of fitness influencer Sylwia Zając, whose presence in social media has made her a celebrity. Although she has hundreds of thousands of followers, and is surrounded by loyal employees and admired by acquaintances, she is looking for true intimacy. The film was shot in 2019 in Warsaw and Łódź, produced by Mariusz Włodarski for Lava Films with a budget of 1.4 m EUR, in coproduction with Zentropa Sweden, EC1 Łódź – Miasto Kultury, Di Factory, Opus Film, Film i Vast, Canal+, Ciné: ma Defacto (associate producer), with support from the Polish Film Institute, the Swedish Film Institute and Creative Europe. The DoP for this project was Michał Dymek. FESTIVALS: Romanian The Campaign / Berliner Competes at 2021 Trieste FF

TRIESTE: Romanian director Marian Crișan sends his fourth feature film The Campaign / Berliner to the main competition of the 32nd Trieste Film Festival, which runs 21 – 30 January 2021 and focuses on films from the CEE, Baltic and Balkan region. The 2021 edition will take place online and be available in Italy only. The film was shot in the director’s hometown of Salonta, in Northern Transylvania, in the autumn of 2018. Moldavian DoP Oleg Mutu, who shot Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and Beyond the Hills (Mobra Films), did the lensing. The film penned by Marian Crișan and Gabriel Andronache is a black comedy following a corrupt politician from Bucharest who arrives in a small town in Transylvania and who, trying to escape justice, decides to run for the EU parliament.

Milcho Manchevski`s Willow to Be Released in USA by Kino Lorber SKOPJE: Academy Award nominee Milcho Manchevski’s  Willow / Vrba will be released by Kino Lorber in the USA in the spring of 2021. The US cinema release of the film will be followed by a VOD release on Kino Now and home video. Following its world premiere at the 2019 Rome Film Festival on 19 October 2019, the film won several awards, had a record-breaking run in the director’s native North Macedonia and was selected as the Macedonian candidate in the Oscars’ international feature film category. Kino Lorber has been around since 1977 with a library of more than 4,000 titles. The US distributor acquired the rights through Reel Suspects, which is handling worldwide sales for the film.

BOX OFFICE: Box Office in Hungary Falls by 70% in 2020

Budapest Heist by Balázs Lóth BUDAPEST: Hungarian domestic box office fell by 62% in 2020. The total gross of Hungarian films was 838 million HUF / 2.3 million in EUR in 2019, but fell to 320.1 million HUF / 888,126 EUR in 2020. The admissions dropped from 595,587 to 224,763. The number of domestic premieres also decreased, from 26 to 16. The 2020 was a nightmare for Hungarian film theatres, which had to close two times because of the pandemic, first on 11 March followed by a reopening during the second half of June. Operations had to be suspended again on 11 November. Cinemas were closed for five months, and it s uncertain when they will be able to reopen.
