In England and Wales in 1841, life expectancy was 40.2 for men and 42.2 for women; 180 years later, both figures had roughly doubled. Life expectancy was historically depressed primarily as a result of very high childhood mortality rates. In a remarkable study from 2013, the academics Anthony Volk and Jeremy Atkinson examined data from a wide range of geographic locations, cultures and time periods and estimated the levels of both infant mortality (death before the age of one) and child mortality (death before the age of 15).
