The Labor Partyâs preselection of candidates across 22 federal seats in Victoria has been blocked until at least the end of May after a Supreme Court judge temporarily upheld a challenge by 10 unions against the party.
The decision reverses Labor leader Anthony Albaneseâs demand for the national executive to fast-track the preselection process and choose candidates by Friday.

In a situation described by an eminent barrister as an âomnishamblesâ, a Labor Party preselection could be halted by the Supreme Court a day after a state government minister held a rally on the steps of the Victorian Parliament calling for a woman to be installed as the candidate for a new federal seat.
The bitter contest for the sear of Hawke, an outer-northern Melbourne electorate in safe Labor territory, might be delayed after 10 unions persuaded the court to further consider their arguments for preventing the preselection ballot from going ahead on Friday. A factional opponent of the unions was likely to be installed as a result of the vote.
