City appoints Randy Bynum to school board

The Fort Payne City Council unanimously selected former police chief Randy Bynum to fill a school board vacancy at Tuesday’s regular meeting. Bynum will replace outgoing school board vice-president Kathy Prater and serve a term expiring in June 2026. The Council interviewed Bynum and fellow applicants Randy McClung, Dana Grimes, Jamie Larson, Slade Carden, Steve Henry, Ronnie Campbell and Gina Kelly Grant. Council member Lynn Brewer expressed a hope that Bynum’s law enforcement experience and familiarity with local issues will enhance safety in city schools. Council President Walter Watson said the difficult part is only being able to select one person when there are so many quality people volunteering to serve.

Legislators meet virtually to give updates on 2021 General Assembly

Over a Zoom meeting Wednesday morning, a group of area legislators gave an update and briefing of the 2021 Virginia General Assembly Session at the annual Politics and Pancakes event hosted by the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance. The legislators gave their thoughts on the session and any expected repercussions the region may face, including the topics of COVID-19, the minimum wage, broadband and children returning to school. Sen. Steve Newman R-Lynchburg, who has attended the event for about 30 years now, said these are times where the state is having tremendous debates on what type of government is wanted. He said the minimum wage is paused at $11 per hour but it could quickly move to $15.

State budget includes funding for waterline project at CVTC

Virginia’s recently approved state budget includes funding up to $250,000 for a Madison Heights project connected with the Central Virginia Training Center site that benefits an adjacent mobile home park community. Sen. Mark Peake, R-Lynchburg, said the measure is included in the state budget and credited Del. Wendell Walker, R-Lynchburg, and Del. Ronnie Campbell, R-Rockbridge, who helped secure the money for a much-needed waterline project. “I think that’s fantastic,” Peake said of the project’s inclusion in the budget. “It kind of ties in with the state’s obligation to continue maintaining that [CVTC] property and make it useful.”
