Three killed in weekend crashes
Three people, including an 11-year-old boy, died in collisions on Yolo County roadways over the weekend, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.
The child was a passenger in an Infiniti that struck a tree shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday on westbound Interstate 80 near the West Capitol Avenue exit in West Sacramento. CHP Officer Rodney Fitzhugh said the vehicle was speeding as it entered a slight curve in the road.
“Due to the Infiniti’s high rate of speed, the driver was unable to safely negotiate the curve, causing the Infiniti to travel off the left edge of the roadway and collide with a tree,” Fitzhugh said in a news release. “The impact with the tree caused the Infiniti to break apart and resulted in fatal injuries to both the driver and right front passenger.”

A big-rig driver escaped a fiery collision that occurred when his truck overturned near Woodland early Thursday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.
According to Officer Rodney Fitzhugh, the solo crash occurred at about 2:30 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5 south of County Road 102.
“For unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled from the roadway where it collided with a metal guardrail,” Fitzhugh said in a news release. “As the vehicle continued traveling in a southerly direction, it collided with a dirt embankment before coming to rest on its side. The driver was able to exit the vehicle prior to the tractor becoming engulfed in flames.”
