Five more individuals have pleaded guilty in connection with their role in the Louisiana staged-accident scam, bringing the total number of guilty pleas to double digits.
The guilty pleas are notable because they are the first under the direction of Duane Evans, interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Evans replaced Peter Strasser, who left office at the end of the Trump administration, an expected move when administrations change.
The five pleas bring the total number of guilty pleas to at least 13, based on FreightWaves’ review of past Justice Department news releases. Indictments in the scam have totaled more than 30. There were three separate sets of guilty pleas last year, one from December, one from October and an earlier one by defendant Damian Labeaud, the first to admit guilt.

NEW ORLEANS A prominent New Orleans law firm and one of its lead attorneys have been hit with a federal racketeering lawsuit in connection with a series of truck accidents that authorities say were staged to rip off insurance companies through bogus medical claims and fraudulent lawsuits.
The King Firm, LLC and attorney Jason Giles were sued Tuesday along with six defendants who previously pleaded guilty in a massive investigation that so far has led to 15 guilty pleas following a string of indictments against 33 individuals.
Four more defendants pleaded guilty Thursday in a conspiracy to stage a New Orleans vehicle accident for $4.7 million in insurance payouts.
That brings to 15 the number of people, out of 33 defendants, who have admitted guilt in a wide-ranging federal investigation of drivers, passengers, other accomplices and a lawyer accused of intentionally crashing vehicles into tractor-trailer rigs.

The latest are Anthony Robinson, 67, Audrey Harris, 53, Jerry Schaffer, 66, and Keishira Robinson, 26, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud.
Prosecutors said Harris, Schaeffer and Keishira Robinson were riding in a vehicle owned by Anthony Robinson when its driver, Roderick Hickman, steered it into a tractor trailer on Oct. 13, 2015, at Alvar Street and France Road. Hickman, known as a slammer, hopped out and entered another vehicle driven by Damian Labeaud, a spotter. Anthony Robinson exited L
