Another Pierce County school district announces in-person graduation ceremonies

May 12 The coronavirus pandemic won t stop this year s Puyallup School District senior class from its traditional graduation ceremony at the Washington State Fairgrounds. It s such a special event, we needed to figure out how to make this work, Communications director Sarah Gillespie said Tuesday.

The Puyallup School District said social distancing, and restricted capacity will be in effect. To maintain capacity restrictions, tickets will be limited to a certain amount per graduate, and ceremonies will be live streamed, Gillespie said in a statement.
In 2007, the Rhode Island Department of Education s Jacobs Recommendations for Consideration report concluded that the state s schools faced a tidal wave of need. Science labs were woefully outdated, roofs leaked, pipes burst, and, at one Newport high school, mice dropped from the ceiling.

The most vulnerable residents those 65 and older in three Newport County communities are lagging compared to other municipalities across Rhode Island when it comes to receiving the COVID vaccine, according to data from the state Department of Health.
Little Compton ranks last in the state, with just 66.5% of its residents in that age group having received at least one dose. Tiverton is just ahead at 68.2%, ranking second to last in Rhode Island, and Portsmouth at 80.7% rounds out the bottom three.
Woonsocket (83.6%) and Providence (84.1%) rank No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, and Newport at 86.1% has the seventh-lowest rate.
Middletown is buried in the middle of the pack at 97.2%, while Jamestown has the fifth-highest rate at 115.5%. The Department of Health says municipalities with small population sizes can have percentages over 100, as the population data are based on 2018 estimates.

NEWPORT Escalating construction prices in the pandemic era are putting a damper on the city’s plans for a new high school and an eight-classroom addition to the elementary school.
The first indication of the seriousness of the problem came this week when the estimated construction costs for the Pell Elementary School addition came in much higher than expected. Those costs were compiled by Behan Bros of Middletown, the designated general contractor for the job.
“It seems to have gotten worse although the pandemic is winding down,” said School Committee member Rebecca Bolan, who is co-chairwoman of the 22-member School Building Committee that includes city officials and members of the community.
