The most vulnerable residents — those 65 and older — in three Newport County communities are lagging compared to other municipalities across Rhode Island when it comes to receiving the COVID vaccine, according to data from the state Department of Health.
Little Compton ranks last in the state, with just 66.5% of its residents in that age group having received at least one dose. Tiverton is just ahead at 68.2%, ranking second to last in Rhode Island, and Portsmouth at 80.7% rounds out the bottom three.
Woonsocket (83.6%) and Providence (84.1%) rank No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, and Newport at 86.1% has the seventh-lowest rate.
Middletown is buried in the middle of the pack at 97.2%, while Jamestown has the fifth-highest rate at 115.5%. The Department of Health says municipalities with small population sizes can have percentages over 100, as the population data are based on 2018 estimates.
