A jealous lover who tried to burn his former psychologist partner to death when she ended the relationship has been jailed for more than 14 years.
Car salesman Gary Travers poured two litres of petrol over his ex as she sat with him in his car before trying to spark a lighter and kill the pair of them in a fire.
Travers had denied accusations he tried to kill psychologist Dr Georgina Ingall after she ended their relationship, but the judge said he had become consumed by feelings of jealousy and resentment when she went out on for Christmas drinks with her work colleagues.
A MAN who was sent back to prison after downing 20 shots then hitting his wife over the head with a bottle of Champagne, has been sentenced. Michael Wheeler, 33, had been released from Parkhurst Prison a few years before on licence, but was recalled after the attack on October 5 at Thorness Bay and is now residing at HMP IW s Albany site with a release date of 2024. Judge Roger Hetherington, sitting at the Isle of Wight Crown Court this week, ruled Wheeler should serve a two-year sentence for the attack, concurrent with the remainder of the sentence currently being served. He must also pay a victim surcharge of £156.
A THINKING skills programme is to be undergone by a 19-year-old with a long list of criminal convictions. Harrison Radcliffe, of Blackwater Road, Newport, admitted assault by beating when he pushed a teenager on to train tracks at Shanklin and dangerous driving, at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on Friday. For his latest offences he had already spent 72 days in custody before being bailed on an electronically monitored curfew to await the sentencing hearing. The court heard he had a range of previous convictions for offences including violence, assault, possession of a bladed article, and aggravated vehicle taking. Judge Roger Hetherington concluded that the assault, when he pushed a 15-year-old on to train tracks, was an ongoing feud probably to do with drugs .
