Cinematographer Christopher Doyle Reflects On His 40-Year Career And What s Next For Him

Curiously, Doyle says he prefers books to photography or cinema. “Reading gives you an imaginary space, whereas film basically tells you what to see,” he says. “Sydney in the Sixties was a period of anarchy. And that rebellious spirit is still with me all that rejection of mediocrity and what was supposed to be normal about stereotypical boys. It was so boring. I hated it. I wanted to get away. I read a lot of crazy stuff that was a bit on the edge.” His yearning for escape from a provincial environment provided the motivation for the 19-year-old Doyle to become a sailor on cargo ships, an endeavour that would quickly bring him to Asia and ultimately be his first connection to filmmaking.

El escritor y cineasta británico Michael Radford, director de títulos tan notables como 1984 , Pasiones en Kenia o El cartero (y Pablo Neruda) y de alguno más discutible como La mula , que rodó en España y que se negó a firmar, debutó como director con Otro tiempo, otro lugar , un drama sutil y lleno de honestidad ambientado en Escocia durante los últimos meses de la II Guerra Mundial en Europa. Radford nació en la India, en Nueva Delhi, el 14 de noviembre de 1950. De madre austríaca y padre británico, se crió fundamentalmente en diferentes países de Oriente Medio. Se licenció en la National Film School en 1974, donde emprendió su labor como realizador. Al principio se dedicó a hacer una serie de documentales para la BBC en Escocia, entre ellos el muy alabado mediometraje Van Morrison in Ireland , tras el cual decidió iniciar la aventura del largometraje.
