Citing continued drought conditions, El Paso County Commissioners recently voted to ban the sale of aerial fireworks, commonly known as sticks and fins, for the July 4 holiday season.
Commissioner Carlos Leon made the motion to ban the sale with the rest of commissioners court voting in agreement.
The decision came after a lengthy conversation about wanting to work with the small businesses that sell the fireworks and the charities they often benefit but also ensuring the safety of the public.
Commissioner Iliana Holguin felt that they did not have much choice but to ban the sticks and fins because they are most likely to cause a fire and the El Paso county was listed as being in extreme drought conditions last week.
