There has been a series of good news surrounding the city of Rochester s two outdoor pools in 2021. First, the Rochester City Council earlier this month voted to reverse the Park Board s previous recommendation to permanently close the Silver Lake Pool, and keep it open for at least one more season this year. First, some background: Last fall, the Parks and Rec Department recommended closing the Silver Lake pool (which opened in 1958) for good, citing years of ongoing challenges in maintaining the 62-year-old facility. Parks and Rec noted that attendance was flat at the pool in 2020. They also had challenges with maintenance and concerns that major breakdowns are imminent. They recommended replacing the pool with an interactive water feature (whatever THAT is.)

Rochester City Council votes to reopen Silver Lake Pool for one season

Created: May 03, 2021 10:45 PM (ABC 6 News) - The Rochester City Council voted 7-0 Monday in favor of funding a reopening for Silver Lake Pool for one season.  City officials are also asking the Park Board for an amount needed to provide free admission to the general public for the season. The Park Board will discuss the council vote Tuesday. Officials planned to close the pool down for good but there is growing urgency from some in the community to keep it open for the season. The $95,000 estimate to reopen will come from the city s contingency funds and planned capital spending. This will likely be the last season it s open but people said it s worth one last run.

The Rochester Park Board last fall recommended permanently closing the outdoor swimming facility because of declining attendance and the high costs associated with repairing and replacing the equipment needed to operate the 62-year-old pool. An earlier report put the average daily attendance at the pool at around 70 people in 2019, which was the last year it was open. It also stated that a 2017 facility assessment identified nearly $900,000 in upgrades needed to address the aging structure and bring it up to current building and health codes.
