Small and medium-sized arts groups, all of which have taken a financial hit during the pandemic, could be in line for a share of $131,000 in grants from Monroe County under new legislation that appears poised to pass the County Legislature this week. The measure was introduced by Legislator Vince Felder and has support from members of the Legislature’s Black and Asian Democratic Caucus. It has been accepted by the Republican majority for consideration by the full Legislature during its meeting on Tuesday a signal that the bill is likely to be approved.
The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), a leading upstate New York ensemble for almost 100 years, has appointed German-born conductor Andreas Delfs to be its 13th musical director. With a stellar career, he has conducted leading orchestras worldwide, knows many American ensembles well and has been connected with the RPO as a guest conductor since 1994 as a friend to previous leaders and as a nearby resident for many years. Oh, and now he lives in Trumansburg. This promises to be a splendid collaboration.
The orchestra was established in 1922 by George Eastman, inventor of the Kodak camera and founder of the world-famous Eastman School of Music. The RPO has essential connections with the school, including its beautiful concert hall. With a roster of about 90 musicians and a full-fledged concert season, the ensemble has been well known and popular in our area. While Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced plans for some outdoor performing arts events to take place this February in New York City, we’ve yet to hear if and when such events will be allowed in our region. So, this week, Rochester City Ballet will debut the first of its Winter Digital Series of virtual productions. A trio of favorite past performances comprise the series, starting with “Dangerous Liaisons” on Friday, Jan. 15. Based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’s novel, the sexy and intriguing tale of seduction and betrayal is told through David Palmer s original choreography (performed at Nazareth College Arts Center in March 2019) and set to Vivaldi s The Four Seasons” concerti. This performance will be streamable through Jan. 31, and followed by “Sleeping Beauty” (available Feb. 12-21) and “Green Eggs and Ham” (available March 12-21).
