Lawrence City Commissioner Jennifer Ananda announced Thursday that she planned to begin a Ph.D. program and would not be running for reelection. Ananda began her term on the commission in 2018, was part of the commission’s first female majority and served as mayor last year. Ananda told the Journal-World that a lot of work remained before the end of her term in December but that she wanted to let the public know that she would not be seeking another term. “I’m still enthusiastic about doing the business of the city, and I’m also looking forward to getting to see the faces of those who will be running,” Ananda said.

Lawrence will be awarded more than $1.6 million in funding from the latest federal pandemic relief package to increase affordable housing and other supports to address homelessness. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently announced that as part of the American Rescue Plan it will allocate nearly $5 billion to help communities across the country create affordable housing and services for people experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness, according to a HUD news release. The supplemental funding is allocated through the HOME Investment Partnerships Program to 651 grantees, including states and local governments. The $5 billion includes $39 million that will be allocated to the state of Kansas. Of that, the City of Lawrence will receive $1.64 million, according to HUD allocation tables.

With at least 280 people estimated to be living outside in Lawrence, city and county leaders are preparing for a deeper discussion about the resources and coordination needed to address the issue of homelessness. As part of its study session Tuesday, the Lawrence City Commission received an approximately three-hour presentation on the various services supporting people experiencing homelessness as well as efforts being made by Douglas County leaders. Speaking to the frustration that has been voiced by some in the community about an inadequate response, Mayor Brad Finkeldei said that he hoped the community would soon be making progress.

Amid concerns with the number of people camping throughout the city, Lawrence city leaders will soon meet with local social service providers and county leaders to discuss the problem of homelessness and what is being done to address it. As part of its study session Tuesday, the Lawrence City Commission will receive a presentation on the various services supporting people experiencing homelessness as well as efforts being made by Douglas County leaders. The commission requested the study session after some residents called for the community to take immediate action to help house the unsheltered people of Lawrence and others expressed concerns about the number of people camping in parks and other public areas throughout the city.
