Residents in Constantine were having a normal night at a ballpark, when shots were fired

Brandon Watson and Rosalie Currier Sturgis Journal Residents in Constantine were having a normal Wednesday evening, with Little League games concluding at the ballpark at Meadow Lane and South Washington Street, when shots were fired. A man was shot while spectators and players were still at the park. When officers arrived, they found a man with multiple gunshot injuries, conscious and alert. The shooter had fled, said Mark Honeysett, Constantine chief of police. The victim, a 38-year-old from Cassopolis, was treated at the scene, then airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Ind., where he underwent surgery, Honeysett said.  The incident did not involve or target anyone else at the gathering, Honeysett said. However, the area went into immediate lockdown.

Kids Club, Coldwater schools child care program director Gracen Yates

The Daily Reporter Child care is in high demand and Coldwater Community Schools offers the solution of Kids Club Childcare for local residents. Gracen Yates is the new director of Kids Club and a 2017 Coldwater High School graduate. She is passionate about early childhood education, but after a few years in a Head Start classroom, Yates realized she wanted to do more to help the whole family.  When the Kids Club position opened she applied with the goal to reach more than just a child during the time under their care. “I like this because it involves the family,” Yates said.

Sturgis airborne history makers that nearly landed in the Great Lakes

Sturgis Journal Sturgis might be considered a quiet, small Michigan city, but throughout history, residents have made a splash in the news. A few nearly splashed into one of The Great Lakes, according to Wayne Lusardi, maritime archaeologist at Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Earlier this year, Allen Kasdorf of Sturgis saw a tribute to Tuskegee Airmen presented and created by Lusardi and DNR. In it, Lusardi mentioned the Hapner brothers of Sturgis, balloonists who crashed a hot- air balloon into Lake Huron in 1892.  That piqued Kasdorf’s interest, so he sent the link to the Sturgis Journal. From there, a triangle of information bounced among the Journal, Lusardi and Jenifer Blouin Policelli, director at Sturgis Historical Museum.

Pines Behavioral Health Mobile Crisis Team helps community-officers

The Daily Reporter Branch County has a new level of mental health support the Mobile Crisis Team from Pines Behavioral Health. When a call comes into 9-1-1 Central Dispatch flagged as a mental health crisis, members a Mobile Crisis Team arrive on the scene to assist officers. They travel the county working with every law enforcement office village, city, county and state. Their goal is to work with the individual in crisis, providing emergency services to help them avoid going to the hospital or jail, said Mark Katz, diversion coordinator for Pines Behavioral Health. Currently, there are three teams, one team for children and two adults. One team member is a master level clinician and the other, a paraprofessional.
