When Detroiter and former NFL cornerback Ron Bartell opened Kuzzo’s Chicken & Waffles on the Avenue of Fashion in 2015, the immediate and lasting response was overwhelming a constant line of patrons perpetually snaking out the door long before the pandemic made such a sight commonplace.
So when the city announced a long and intensive streetscaping project of Livernois Avenue that would disrupt business for most of 2019, Bartell and his team decided to close the busy restaurant to renovate its kitchen, retrain staff and reinvest in the business.
The process took seven long months, finally finishing up in the middle of March 2020.
