Braves acquire OF Joc Pederson in trade with Cubs
By JAY COHENJuly 16, 2021 GMT
CHICAGO (AP) The Atlanta Braves acquired Joc Pederson in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, bolstering their outfield after losing Ronald Acuña Jr. to a season-ending knee injury.
Atlanta sent minor league first baseman Bryce Ball to Chicago for Pederson, who is batting .230 with 11 homers and 39 RBIs in 73 games. The 29-year-old Pederson spent his first seven seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers before signing with the Cubs in free agency in February.
The Braves are looking to return to the playoffs, but their pursuit of a fourth straight NL East title took a hit when Acuña tore the ACL in his right knee during Saturday’s 5-4 victory over Miami.
Cubs officially sellers, trade OF Joc Pederson to Braves in a deal that makes sense for both sides Much more of this coming for the Cubs. And will Pederson recreate Joctober with the Braves?

After being in first place in the NL Central just a couple weeks ago, an 11-game losing streak led to the Chicago Cubs (44-46) being eight games back of the Milwaukee Brewers entering the All-Star break. FanGraphs currently has the Cubs’ playoff chances at 4.1%.
While some organizations may wait it out a bit in this spot (hey, it’s a 1-in-25 chance; crazier things have happened!), the Cubs have already decided their trade deadline plan- and it’s what many evaluators assumed Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer wanted to do all along anyway, with the team having so many big-name upcoming free agents, and with doubts about the ownership’s willingness to spend like the big-market organization they are anytime soon.

With the MLB trade deadline just over two weeks away, the hot stove has officially started to flicker on.
The Braves announced Thursday they had acquired outfielder Joc Pederson in a trade with the Cubs. Chicago will receive first baseman Bryce Ball, who s spent the season at the High-A level.
Pederson, 29, signed with the Cubs this offseason on a one-year, $7 million contract with a mutual option for 2022. In 73 games, he hit .230/.300/.418 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs.
The Braves are in need of outfield reinforcements as they try to run down the Mets in the National League East. Ronald Acuña Jr. is out for the season with a torn ACL, while Marcell Ozuna s status is currently in limbo following his arrest for domestic battery in May.
