Midlakes names 2021 valedictorian, salutatorian

Midlakes High School named Lyndsey Wright as valedictorian and Ryleigh Bradley as salutatorian of the Class of 2021.
Wright plans to attend Cornell University this fall to study biomedical engineering.
Her activities and achievements include National Honor Society, Mary Hicks Preston Board, Student Council, Interact Club, Yearbook Club, Masterminds, class president, indoor and outdoor track, dance with Studio for the Performing Arts, scholar-athlete, high honor roll, mastery in math and science, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference ambassador, attendant with Gary Sinise Foundation’s Soaring Valor Trip, University of Rochester’s Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass Award, Chemistry Achievement Award and the Ontario County Youth Advisory Board Certificate of Recognition.

COVID-19 mitigation strategies may be to thank for the lack of acute flaccid myelitis cases.
The mysterious illness showed up in 2014, and researchers are baffled by the paralysis it causes.
Cases of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), a polio-like illness that causes limb weakness and facial droopiness in children, baffled doctors when it first showed up in 2014. After six years, illness rates dwindled in 2020.
Dr. Sunil Sood, a pediatrician who specializes in infectious disease at Northwell Health, said the small number of cases is largely because of COVID-19 mitigation strategies, like wearing masks and social distancing.
