Kirkpatrick ended up purchasing a pregnant mare, called Amber, from Cey’s farm. “They documented the journey of that horse going all the way over to Scotland,” Cey said. “I think it is great what Janice is doing there.” Cey recalls it was actually in the summer of 2017 when Kirkpatrick visited his family’s farm with the film crew, to see the horses and purchase a Clydesdale. He still keeps in touch with her. “The mare is doing great and of course the filly foal, they call her Snowy, she is doing fine, growing. She is a nice big filly, which I had expected, genetically. She should have some great qualities coming out,” Cey said.

Horse & Hound Trending: Credit: Claire Spelling Scotland’s treasured draught horse the Clydesdale is to become a big star of the small screen this Christmas when the BBC airs a documentary about the battle to preserve the breed. Like many of the British heavy horses, the Clydesdale is now classed as vulnerable by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, having suffered the loss of its primary role since the onset of mechanisation. Clydesdale: Saving the Greatest Horse is produced by the BBC, in partnership with Screen Scotland and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and follows Clydesdale enthusiast Janice Kirkpatrick as she travels to the Canadian Prairies to source a rare black mare from a bloodline “lost” to the UK.

IT IS Scotland’s most iconic and distinctive horse, a beast which powered industrial and agricultural revolutions and helped to win the First World War.  Now a plan to save the Clydesdale horse in its homeland has been revealed in a new BBC Scotland feature-length documentary to be shown next week.  The film, Clydesdale: Saving the Greatest Horse, reveals how the breed is entering the “vortex of extinction”.  Once exported from Scotland all over the world, the current small size and relative isolation of the population has impacted on its genetic diversity.  Classed as “vulnerable” in the UK by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, urgent action is needed to halt its decline.
