Tractor training for Nebraska teens

KLKN-TV April 19, 2021 9:26 am LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) This June, the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and Nebraska Extension is hosting a statewide tractor safety course for teens. This tractor safety training course will be held at five sites in Nebraska for teens ages 14 and 15 from June 7 to 11. The first day of the course will be online, then the required driving test will be offered in person, with COVID-19 safety precautions. Federal law prohibits children under 16 from using certain farm equipment unless their parents or legal guardians own the farm. However, certification received through the course grants an exemption to the law allowing 14- and 15-year-olds to drive a tractor and do fieldwork with some equipment.

Beginning shepherd program set in northeast Nebraska

The daylong program is focused on educational activities for beginning sheep producers. Apr 09, 2021 A beginning shepherd program is being planned for May 1 by the Nebraska Sheep and Goat Producers Association and Nebraska Extension. The program will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Veggie Palace/4-H Livestock Area at the Pierce County Fairgrounds in Pierce, Neb. It will include numerous programs for sheep producers, with a focus on education for new producers. The daylong program includes a session on grazing by Randy Saner, Nebraska Extension educator at North Platte. Rachel Gibb with offer a presentation on beginning flock health. Michael Littlefield is planning a shearing demonstration.

If you pay too much, you are setting yourself up for a situation where those heifers cannot possibly pay for themselves over time. At a recent University of Nebraska BeefWatch webinar, Randy Saner, Nebraska Extension educator, told participants that longevity or replacement rates within the herd are crucial in deciding what you can afford to pay and if a heifer made money for the operation, or cost money.
