Editorial Sector viewed as charity a growing economic force The latest edition of an Indiana University report is a timely reminder of the powerful economic punch packed by the nonprofit sector in this region and statewide. It s powerful to the tune of a $1.7 billion annual payroll in northeast Indiana; $15 billion across the state. Only manufacturing jobs outpace nonprofits, with the gap narrowing. How has the nonprofit sector become such a strong economic presence? If you re thinking of jobs filled by poorly paid do-gooders in small charitable organizations, think again. Most nonprofit employees work in health care and education. Parkview Health and Indiana Tech are two examples. The 11-county region studied by researchers at the O Neill School of Public & Environmental Affairs at Indiana University and the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy finds the sector includes 11% of all employees and payroll in northeast Indiana. That s 38,000 employees.
