The North Tahoe Fire Protection District has announced the appointment of Steve Leighton as its new fire chief.
Chief Leighton was appointed by the Board at its April 27 meeting. He replaces the retiring Chief Mike Schwartz, who served as North Tahoe’s Fire Chief since 2012.
Leighton is a 29-year veteran of the fire service and has served as North Tahoe Fire’s Division Chief of Operations until his promotion to Assistant Chief in 2020. Leighton was promoted to Acting Chief this January, and his appointment to Fire Chief became effective May 1, 2021. He holds degrees in Public Relations, Fire Science Technology, and holds a nationally accredited Chief Fire Officer certification. ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District recently added six new recruits after they completed Capital City Regional Fire Academy this last month.
“Like many others in 2020, attending classes and advancing one’s career was a challenge for these recruits, but they made a commitment to each other and to TDFPD that they would bond together, persevere and complete the program,” said TDFPD Fire Chief Scott Lindgren. “Individually they broke academy performance records and as a unit they consistently were at the top of the class. I couldn’t be more proud to welcome them into the TDFPD family.”

The Washoe County Health District invited 500 randomly selected individuals from the 65-69 age group for COVID-19 vaccinations, local health officials said in a press briefing Thursday.
Health officials continue to see individuals show up to the Reno-Sparks Livestock events center, where the Point of Dispensing (PODs) are located, without making an appointment.
They urge people to get on the waitlist for an appointment by calling them at 775-328-2427 or by visiting their website at www.Covid19WashoeVaccine.com. Individuals on the waitlist are selected at random by the health district, which then emails or calls to set the actual appointment.
