This Australian Cheese Company Has Officially Changed Its Name After Citing An Offensive History Delish 1/14/2021
Update: January 12, 2021
In an announcement from July of this past summer, an Australian dairy brand said they were reevaluating the name of one of their cheese brands due to racist connotations. The cheese, which was previously named COON cheese after founder Edward William Coon, will now be called CHEER cheese.
Edward William Coon patented a cheese-ripening process that is used to make the cheese brand s products, but following suit with other brands that reconsidered the historically problematic undertones of their names and logos, parent company Saputo Dairy Australia decided to change the name. Back in July, the company said they were deciding on a name that could still honor the founder of the brand while also being in line with their values.
Coon cheese renamed Cheer Cheese after six-month search for new name
January 13, 2021
The makers of Coon Cheese have unveiled a new name for the well-known dairy product after a six-month process to give the 85-year-old brand a new identity.
Cheer Cheese will appear in supermarkets around the country from July, according to a statement from Canadian-owned parent company Saputo Dairy Australia, released on Wednesday morning.
Saputo has owned the Coon brand since 2015. In July 2020, the company announced it would “retire” the Coon Cheese name in response to increasing calls for brands to move away from product names that have racist connotations.
Coon Cheese Rebrands as Cheer Following Pressure by Activist
The makers of Coon cheese have announced that Cheer will be the rebranded name for its famous Australian product following pressure from an Aboriginal activist who said the original name was racist.
Saputo Dairy Australia on Jan. 13 said the name change to Cheer was to honour its consumers by aligning with “current attitudes and perspectives.”
The move comes after Aboriginal activist Stephen Hagan reignited his campaign first attempted in 1999 after seeing Nestle rebrand Allen’s Red Skins and Chicos lollies to Red Rippers and Cheekies in 2020.
Amid the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement’s resurgence which was founded by Marxist organisers in July 2020 Hagan was successful in convincing Saputo to change the name.
New brand name for Coon Cheese revealed
Saputo Dairy responds to increased consumer demand for racial and cultural sensitivity from brand owners and rebrands iconic cheese
Six months after bowing to consumer backlash against the racial overtones of its iconic Australian cheese brand, Coon has announced ‘Cheer Cheese’ as the new name for its product from July this year.
In a statement, the brand’s parent company, Saputo Dairy Australia, said the name change followed a diligent review to honour consumer affinity with the brand while aligning to “current attitudes and perspectives”.
Despite the name ‘Coon’ being derived from original founder, Edward William Coon, who patented a cheese ripening process used to make the company’s original cheeses in 1935, consumer concerns and sentiments saw the company opt to retire the brand name after an 85-year run.
