River runners question county s furlough of trusted voice

Outfitters and river access advocates are worried about a budget decision to furlough a longtime county employee who coordinated commercial use of the Snake River between Wilson and South Park boat ramps. Snake River Angler owner Will Dornan was incredulous at the decision to furlough Mike Estes, a recreation program coordinator who has worked for Teton County for 24 years. Make that 28, if his time spent as a Teton County Search and Rescue volunteer is included. “You just got rid of your very, very best,” Dornan said. Since 2017 Estes has coordinated commercial use of the county-administered stretch of the Snake River, overseeing the river management program, which was revised and made final in 2018. Dornan didn’t originally want the program, and, specifically, the permits that came with it. But he said Estes managed it well, and he was concerned about letting him go.

Pathway users rejoice as county decides to plow Hwy 22 section

After hearing concerns from the public, Teton County commissioners unlocked $6,000 to plow the Highway 22 pathway from Emily’s Pond to the Y-intersection. Plowing that section will link trails between the West Bank and Jackson, giving wintertime pathway users a way to get to and from town. Brian Schilling, Teton County’s pathways and trails coordinator, is happy about the decision. “I’m psyched to have it plowed, because I do occasionally use it,” he said, noting that it also provides kids who live in Skyline Ranch and other western neighborhoods another way to get to school. Parks and Rec will also clear the path stretching from Tribal Trail Road to Highway 22, but the segment connecting to Teton Science Schools will not be plowed.
