BUCKINGHAM TOWNSHIP, PA The Bucks County Employees Retirement Board has made a multi-million dollar pledge to fund the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center and its partners.
The board s $5 million commitment will help the Buckingham based research institute reach its $50 million fundraising goal for the Hatch Biofund, which is intended to support PABC member companies. The fund was created by the Baruch S. Blumberg Insititute, based in Doylestown, which manages the PABC.
More than 80 small to mid-size research and pharmaceutical companies belong to the PABC, and about half of them have operations on site in Bucks County.

BUCKS COUNTY, PA The research group Leapfrog has published their latest update to hospital safety grades, and three in Bucks County earned the top mark.
Doylestown Hospital, St. Mary Medical Center and St. Luke s Quakertown Hospital were among just 56 across Pennsylvania to receive the top A grade for safety, the analysis shows.
Specifically, the study ranked hospitals based on their ability to protect patients from preventable errors, accidents, injuries, and infections.

BUCKS COUNTY, PA Even with its COVID-19 vaccination program hitting its stride, Bucks County is continuing to wrestle with new cases in what health experts call a fourth wave of the pandemic.
Nearly 2,000 new coronavirus cases (1,977) were reported in Bucks County last week, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. That s a 7-percent increase over the previous week and brought the county s case total to 55,980 since the pandemic began.
Last week also saw 20 new deaths attributed to COVID in Bucks County. That s the most since February, and brings the county s total to 1,212.

BUCKS COUNTY, PA A Bucks County inmate had several years added to his sentence after he pleaded guilty to helping run a drug-smuggling operation inside Bucks County Correctional Facility.
Vincent McCandless, 35, of Huntingdon, was one of nine men including a former correctional officer from Warminster accused in June of being part of the opioid ring, which smuggled Suboxone strips into the jail.
McCandless pleaded guilty Thursday to contraband and criminal conspiracy. He was sentenced by Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey L. Finley to 35-70 months in prison, to be served after he completes his original sentence.
