Online retailer Winebuyers seeks investors

Online retailer Winebuyers seeks ‘investors’ 5th February, 2021 by Rupert Millar Online wine club Winebuyers is seeking buyers and/or investors for its business, presenting itself as a thriving concern when, behind the scenes, there is a growing clamour from a string of unpaid suppliers and unhappy customers. The “disruptive” and “exclusive” online wine club is currently listed as an acquisition opportunity on Hilco Streambank’s website, the company having been appointed to, “actively seek interested parties in relation to the opportunity to acquire, or invest in, Winebuyers”. The bid deadline has been extended to 10 February 2021. Launched in 2018, apparently “in response to the wine trade’s slow uptake of e-commerce”, the offer claims that Winebuyers is, “fast becoming the largest online shop” with access to 50,000 wines and spirits.

En Magnum targets file lawsuit

En Magnum targets file lawsuit 4th February, 2021 by Rupert Millar Sandrine Goeyvaerts and Fleur Godart, two women at the centre of the En Magnum cartoon furore last year, have filed a lawsuit citing sexism and cyber-harassment. In late November last year the Bettane & Desseauve title En Magnum, published a cartoon which was decried as “crude”, “misogynistic” and “sexist”. It featured a tall, blonde woman wearing a revealing red dress propositioning a squat, rotund wine merchant in order to make him list her wine. The woman was widely believed to be a barely-veiled caricature of Godart, founder of a wine agency and a leading figure in Paris’ natural wine scene.

Catena Institute finds irrefutable proof of terroir

Catena Institute finds ‘irrefutable proof’ of terroir 4th February, 2021 by Rupert Millar The Catena Institute of Wine has announced the publication of a new paper which it says, “irrefutably proves the existence of terroir and its persistence across vintages”. A long-debated term in wine, its meaning and even existence supported and dismissed by generations, the study set out to find if wines (not grapes or must) from different sites could be identified by a chemical fingerprint. Published today in the journal The researchers compared wines from four different levels of terroir in Argentina’s Mendoza – focusing on 23 individual parcels smaller than a hectare distributed across three large regions, six departments, 12 geographical indications and over three vintages (2016, 2017 and 2018).
