Callaway Has Big Plans For The C8 Corvette

Callaway s modified C8 Corvette is going to be epic. Earlier this year, Callaway Cars unveiled the Chevrolet Silverado Signature Edition, a supercharged version of the full-size pickup with a boosted output of 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. The specialty vehicle manufacturer specializes in building high-performance versions of General Motors cars and is best known for its modified Corvettes like the legendary Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette. With this in mind, we ve been wondering when the new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will get the Callaway treatment. Speaking with Autoweek, company founder Reeves Callaway confirmed that Callaway has big plans for the C8 Corvette, but it s going to be a long time before we get to see the fruits of its labor.

An Iconic, One-Of-A-Kind 254-MPH Corvette Is Now Up For Auction

Photo: Reeves Callaway/Bring A Trailer The one-of-one Callaway Sledgehammer C4 Corvette was built to do two things crack 250 mph, and not fall apart in the process. John Lingenfelter blasted past that objective on October 26, 1988, reaching 254.76 mph. Then the car sat in museums for about three decades. Now it’s up for sale. Advertisement At the time of writing there are nine days left before the Sledgehammer goes to the highest bidder over at Bring A Trailer. The current bid stands at $425,476, and while the Carfax report says it was sold once, in 2004, the buyer was none other than founder Reeves Callaway himself.

The Fastest Street Car On Earth In 1988, The Callaway SledgeHammer, Is For Sale

Top speed records were pretty popular in the ’80s, and Reeves Callaway was no stranger to them. But most of the cars he sent down the road were one-offs. In 1988, Callaway wanted to see if he could set a top speed record with a car that still had creature comforts. The result was this: the 1988 Chevrolet Corvette Callaway SledgeHammer. The car features a 5.7-liter V8 with a Cosworth crankshaft, forged pistons, a dry-sump oil system, MSD ignition, and two Turbonetics T04B turbos paired to twin intercoolers. Callaway rated the engine at 880 hp and 772 lb-ft of torque, which is hard to argue with given the performance it managed. In October 1988, this car was driven to the 7.5-oval track at the Transportation Research Center in Ohio and drove to a record-setting speed of 254.76 mph (that’s 410km/h for the old world).
