One local contractor does not believe the increase in cement prices from one local supplier will have significant negative impacts on the construction sector.
NH International executive chairman Emile Elias said the new prices of Rock Hard Distributors Ltd posed no threats to the cement supply and Trinidad Cement Ltd (TCL) can fill the gaps.
He told Newsday on Thursday, “There is nothing that Rock Hard cement either does or can do that will impact on the local construction sector. They are a peripheral player and some of the allegations they made against the government are simply not true.

THE local and regional importers of the Rock Hard hydraulic cement, manufactured in Turkey, will on Thursday seek to convince a High Court judge to grant an interim order restraining the Ministry of Trade and Industry from imposing a quota and 50 per cent in duties for cement.
Rock Hard Distributors of TT and Rock Hard Distribution of St Lucia are challenging the November 13, 2020 decision of the Ministry of Trade to introduce a quota from January 1 only allowing 75,000 tonnes across the board for all distributors for the year.

Cement importer, Rock Hard Cement is seeking to block the Ministry of Trade and Industry from imposing a ceiling of 75,000 tonnes of cement that could be imported in the country.
In a telephone interview with Sunday Newsday, Rock Hard’s local distributor Motilal Rahmit and Sons, managing director Ryan Ramhit said the ministry s new policy, especially increased tariffs and duties, have forced the company to close its operations for one month from Monday.
