Illinois redistricting process continues without 2020 census data

A delay in the availability of crucial 2020 census data is dividing state legislators and residents as they look to remap Illinois’ congressional districts in a legislative year that’s been anything but ordinary.  Typically, the Illinois General Assembly convenes every 10 years to draw new legislative maps for state and federal legislative districts after the release of U.S census data. Tim Butler, R-Springfield, used the hearing as an opportunity to highlight why Illinois needs a new redistricting process and said Springfield was an example of how using a partisan process breaks up communities. He said when the current maps were first drawn in 2011, Springfield was divided up among three different senators and three representatives none living in Springfield.
