Posted: May 23, 2021 EK residents invited to online dementia awareness event The Alzheimer Society of B.C. will join Alzheimer Societies across Canada to celebrate the people who have raised funds and awareness for community members affected by dementia in an online celebration at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 30. The event is the culmination of a month of activity for the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s, Canada’s largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The online celebration will be streamed on the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s Facebook page (@AlzheimerBC) and on walkforalzheimers.ca. Kootenay residents are invited to watch the online celebration, which will showcase stories of people who are affected by dementia from across the country.

Newcastle man jailed for longer Dean Stewart has had his sentence increased following an intervention by the Solicitor General, Rt Hon Michael Ellis QC MP. From: 17 February 2021 A Newcastle man has had his sentence increased following an intervention by the Solicitor General, Rt Hon Michael Ellis QC MP. Dean Stewart, 25, assaulted Ryan Covell in the early hours of 15 June 2020 during an argument. Stewart lashed out with a knife using considerable force to stab Ryan Covell in the neck and lacerate his liver, as well as inflicting wounds from behind, causing life changing injuries. Stewart has 27 previous convictions for violence, robbery and assault, and was subject to a suspended sentence at the time of his attack.
