Three more Taunton residents have died of COVID in the past week and the city has now surpassed 3,000 total cases for the first time.
As of Monday, Jan. 4, the city has had 84 COVID-related deaths, up from 81 the week before, according to the city’s Health Department.
The total number of cases in Taunton has climbed over the 3,000 mark for the first time in the pandemic.
As of Dec. 31, the city had 3,117 confirmed coronavirus cases, up from 2,832 cases as of Dec. 24, according to the state Department of Public Health.
The test positivity rate in Taunton is hovering just under 10 percent at 9.87 percent.

TAUNTON Eight Taunton residents have died of COVID in just the past two weeks.
As of Monday morning, there have been 81 COVID-19 related deaths among Taunton residents since the start of the pandemic, according to the Board of Health.
Two weeks ago, on Dec. 15, that number was 73.
The city is in the midst of a sustained COVID surge, with total cases more than doubling in the past two months.
The city has had a total of 2,832 confirmed cases over the course of the pandemic as of Dec. 24. On Nov. 5, that number was 1,361.
Other key indicators have also gone steeply in the wrong direction.
