TRIBUTES have flooded in following the death from Covid-19 of Keighley councillor and former Lord Mayor of Bradford, Abid Hussain. He became a Labour councillor for Keighley Central in 2010 and had served on a number of council committees during the past decade. He was the current deputy chairman of Keighley and Shipley Area Planning Panel and Keighley Area Committee and a reserve member of the District Planning Panel. Cllr Hussain served as Lord Mayor of Bradford in 2017-18, during which time his Lord Mayor’s Appeal raised thousands of pounds for the Down Syndrome Training and Support Services in Bingley and the Wishing Well Appeal.
PEOPLE across Keighley are being urged to maintain their vigilance over the festive period in the battle against Covid-19. Bradford Council leader, Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, says it’s vital that everyone adheres to the regulations designed to stop the spread of the virus. Her comments come after the Government announced that planned Christmas bubbles of up to three households would now only be allowed on Christmas Day instead of across a five-day period, in Tier 1 to 3 areas. Councillor Hinchcliffe also voiced relief that Bradford and the rest of West Yorkshire had not been placed under the new Tier 4 restrictions. She added: “I want to thank everyone in the district for your efforts in keeping the infection rate low. But the infection rate is not going down as quickly as it was, so we need to be on our guard.
THE decision to keep the Bradford district in Tier 3 has been branded disappointing by Bradford Council s Conservative Group, Today it was announced the district, and the rest of West Yorkshire, would remain under the very high alert level. Councillor Rebecca Poulsen, Leader of the Conservative Group said, “It is disappointing that Bradford District residents will spend Christmas and New Year under Tier 3 restrictions. It has been a long hard year for most people and it would have been nice for residents to have had more freedom to see their loved ones and maybe go out for a meal, so it is very disheartening that this is not to be.
