THE son of former Lord Mayor of Bradford Abid Hussain – who died on Christmas Eve after falling victim to Covid-19 – is bidding to follow in his father s footsteps as a councillor. Mohsin Hussain has been chosen by Labour to contest Keighley Central at the Bradford Council elections in May. Councillor Hussain had represented the ward since 2010 and served on a number of council committees over the decade. He was Lord Mayor in 2017-18, during which time his Lord Mayor’s Appeal raised thousands of pounds for the Down Syndrome Training and Support Services in Bingley and the Wishing Well. Mohsin, 26, who has his own immigration advisory firm based at Devonshire Street in the town, said: I saw my father s passion and commitment for the community and loved and admired him greatly. COUNCILLORS used the first meeting of the year to pay tribute for former Lord Mayor Abid Hussain, who died on Christmas Eve. Cllr Hussain, a Labour Councillor for the Keighley Central ward and Lord Mayor of Bradford in 2017/18, died of Covid 19, and his funeral was held on Christmas Day. At a meeting of the Council s Executive yesterday, Leader Susan Hinchcliffe gave an update on how the Covid 19 pandemic was hitting the District. She said there had been 780 Covid 19 deaths in Bradford since the beginning of March.
She said: He was a lovely guy, he was a joy. I put him forward as Lord Mayor and was so happy to serve as his deputy. He was so lovely, he has a lovely wife and a lovely family and he was a really good friend to me. I always felt like part of his family, he always made you feel welcome and I m really upset by this, it s so shocking I still can t believe its true. I thought he was starting to get better; it s a shock. He will be truly missed, I went to Pakistan with him last year and it was such a good time, we laughed every day.
