Jewish Community Center prepares to keep kids safe at summer camp

Summer is months away, but for kids, a chance to get back outside with friends couldn t come any sooner. One Baltimore County-based organization is already preparing for that with the return of its version of summer camp with COVID-19-friendly measures keeping kids safe.Socially distanced and masked fun will be part of new ways to play at summer camp at the Jewish Community Center s popular J Camps. Scary fun: Why kids should play in the dark

Scary fun: Why kids should play in the dark Sierra Filucci © Photograph by Imgorthand / Getty Images None A few weeks ago, Quynh Tran, her husband, and their two daughters, 11 and 14, skated under a Castro Valley, California, highway overpass after dark. They watched their shadows grow up the sides of the concrete walls and pretended the shapes were monsters eating each other. “It s really neat having that experience when no one s around,” Tran says. “And it s a different feeling when you do it in the dark.” Since the pandemic started, Tran’s family has been avoiding the busy hiking trails near their house. Instead, they venture out at night, when fewer people are around. “Even though the pandemic limited our normal activities, we were still committed to keeping our kids active and being outdoors … even if in the dark,” she says.
