Drivers cresting the hill on Cathedral Road in Rindge are greeted with a sea of small American flags at the entrance to Cathedral of the Pines. Each of the 660 flags represents one of the 660 veterans on average who die by suicide each month.
The display, called “Flags for Forgotten Heroes,” was installed on Saturday, and will stay in place through Veterans’ Day.
Event organizer Bill Rohr, himself a Vietnam veteran, opened up to the gathered crowd Saturday about his own struggle with mental health, recalling a time when he had thoughts of self-harm, but was able to call a help line and take himself to the hospital.

A Jaffrey man sustained injuries to his wrist and legs, as well as road rash, following a motorcycle crash on Father’s Day.
Police responded to Cathedral Road on Sunday, at about 1:05 p.m., for a crash involving a pickup truck and a motorcycle, according to Rindge Police Chief Dan Anair.
The crash involved a 1947 Dodge pickup truck, driven by a 53-year-old man from Jaffrey, and a 2004 Harley Davidson driven by a 41-year-old Jaffrey man.
Relations of the motorcyclist, Alex Cutter, have created a GoFundMe.com account to raise funds to support him during his recovery.
Two trees on the Rindge town common were draped with toilet paper on Saturday night, in a scaled-down version of what is typically a Halloween prank.“The toilet papering was not to the extent that it normally is,” Rindge Police Chief Dan Anair said.

A Jaffrey man was arrested Monday night after allegedly leading a police chase through New Ipswich, Jaffrey and Rindge.
Gavin Anderson, 27, of Jaffrey, was arrested by Rindge police Monday and charged with possession of marijuana, though Jaffrey police say they intend to bring further charges related to the chase.
Jaffrey received a be-on-the-lookout alert from New Ipswich for Anderson’s pickup truck Monday night and spotted as it passed their police department at about 11:26 p.m., Jaffrey Police Chief Todd Muilenberg said.
Police followed the vehicle through Goodnow Street, Nutting Street and onto Peterborough Street, attempting to pull over the vehicle, but lights and sirens were ignored, Muilenberg said.
