From the ashes: Sawmill s big decision after bushfire

Premium Content Subscriber only The operators of a Richmond Valley sawmill are finally looking to restart operations, almost 18 months after it was destroyed in a devastating bushfire. A development application has been lodged with Richmond Valley Council for the site of the Myrtle Creek sawmill on Myrtle Creek Rd, and it is currently on public exhibition. However it is not for a full-scale sawmill. In documents lodged with the council by Graham Meineke of Lismore-based GM Project Development and Management, it states the DA is for a mobile sawmill that will primarily saw/dock logs for the firewood market . The operators will not use the main shed, which was partially destroyed, along with two saws, in the 2019 bushfires.

From one man to 90 staff: Huge success for Lismore business

Premium Content Subscriber only Excellent communications skills are preferred over muscle when it comes to finding the right staff, according to a rapidly growing Northern Rivers security firm. In the three years since it was founded, Herne s Security Solutions innovative approach has seen the business grow, and its directors attribute their success to the high quality of their locally recruited personnel and suppliers. Several years ago, Josh Herne, 28, and Levi Loughlin, 32, met while working for other security providers. Then Josh took a leap and started his own business which really impressed me, Mr Loughlin said. Very quickly by himself in three months he gained extreme traction, I wanted to work with him when I saw what he was doing, it was really innovative.

EXPLAINED: What changes to council s structure really mean

Premium Content Subscriber only Major changes are on the cards for the structure of Richmond Valley Council, as it seeks to set itself up for a strong future. At this month s meeting, councillors agreed to go ahead with the proposed changes, which will include creating two senior positions. Currently, the executive consists of general manager Vaughan Macdonald and the director of infrastructure and environment, Angela Jones. In his report to the council, Mr Macdonald said they had been working hard to improve the council s performance as a customer-focused and progressive council . It is now time to set up our organisation for the next phase of growth and maturity in how we operate, make decisions and deliver services, he said.
