Richmond sees record opioid overdose deaths amid the pandemic
In 2019, there was a record 113 fatal opioid deaths in the city, according to Julie Karr, the Opioid Coordinator for the Richmond City and Henrico Health Districts. In 2000 that number climbed to 203. Karr said the highest surge was right around the time restrictions kicked in in the spring.

RICHMOND, Va. Following a record high year in 2019 for fatal opioid overdoses in the Richmond, health officials said that number doubled in 2020.
Julie Karr, the Opioid Coordinator for the Richmond City and Henrico Health Districts, said the number of overdose deaths had been climbing since 2014, with higher rates in Richmond than in other parts of the state. But in 2020, those numbers skyrocketed.

RICHMOND, Va. As the more contagious Delta variant began to take hold in the United States, Virginia Health Officials worked to address vaccine hesitancy amid declining vaccination rates.
A few cases of the Delta variant or B1.617.2, had already been found in Virginia, according to Virginiaâs Vaccination Coordinator Dr. Danny Avula. He said in the United States, it made up about 6% of cases, and was expected to spread.
âI think it s just yet another reminder to us that we re not out of the woods yet,â said Dr. Avula. âThe reality is that itâs here in Virginia and weâre going to see more and more as the weeks go on.â
A little more than 51% of adults in the City of Richmond have gotten at least one COVID-19 shot, according to Richmond Health District officials. Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney said the city has set a goal of reaching the 70% by July, which means there is still a long way to go.

The Richmond and Henrico Health District also has its own mobile vaccine team doing similar work within the two districts. Officials say that between the programs, 110 people have been vaccinated so far.

RICHMOND, Va. The Richmond Ambulance Authority has restarted its program to bring the COVID-19 vaccine to those who are home-bound and have difficulty getting vaccinated.
