The causeway gates closed permanently on Tuesday as part of the construction of the new Petitcodiac River Bridge linking Moncton and Riverview.
Department of Transportation and Infrastructure spokesperson Michael Pauley said the river channel will eventually take shape under the new bridge.
“You will also see the accretion of silt material in front of and behind the gates structure and it should fill in over time to be naturally created in the salt marsh.”
Pauley said the closure of the gates will have little if any impact on the passage of fish and other aquatic species.

Construction of the new bridge over the Petitcodiac River linking Moncton and Riverview is on time and on budget so far according to officials with the New Brunswick Department of Transportation.
Modern Construction is the main contractor on-site which is actually the same company that helped build the causeway in the 1960s.
Department of Transportation assistant director of operations Michael Pauley says the work has been broken down into phases.
“We’ve started excavating the lower part where the new channel is going to enter under the new bridge – we call that Zone 5 and that’s almost complete. Right now they are moving on to Zone 6, which is the detour that drivers were using during the bridge construction and they are starting to excavate that.”

Ritchie Boyd has created drone footage of the construction being done on the new Causeway Bridge.
The Causeway closed on April 5th for six months to complete the opening of the Bridge and the restoration of the Petitcodiac River.
Boyd is also interested in finding someone to professionally edit the footage and have a music added to the videos.
