Currier to close for the winter, to slow COVID spread, but promises arts online

Sunday is the last day for a while to wander through the galleries at the Currier Museum of Art. With COVID-19 still on the march in Manchester, the museum is closing at 5 p.m. Sunday until at least mid-January, doing its part to slow the spread of the virus. The move comes two weeks after the Palace Theatres shut down, bringing the Queen City’s winter arts season to an abrupt close. Two exhibitions will close early: the art of Black Lives Matter activists in Manchester, and a series of works by Portsmouth artist Richard Haynes, which tells the story of a family escaping enslavement using patterns inspired by traditional quilts.

In an opinion piece published in the journal The Lancet Global Health, the scientists have said that mothers-to-be have been excluded from more than three quarters of Covid-19 treatment trials. The authors warned that the “exclusion poses risk to potential treatment effectiveness and safety for pregnant women who may be at increased risk of severe Covid-19 illness”. They argued that there is “a public health obligation to include pregnant women in treatment trials to identify and provide appropriate management and care”.
