Restricted Occupancy Ordinance approved in College Station

and last updated 2021-04-20 15:22:43-04 BRAZOS COUNTY, TX â The city of College Station voted to adopt a restricted occupancy ordinance also known as ROO during a special city council meeting Monday night. This ordinance limits no more than two unrelated people from living in a single-family household. The council voted five to two in favor of the ROO. Mayor Karl Mooney was one of the opposing votes. The meeting lasted five hours as roughly 40 people spoke out for and against the ordinance. There have been several meetings addressing the topic over the last year all leading up to the final call.

Let s begin.Â The beating heart of this ordinance is that it would disallow more than two unrelated individuals to live together in newly built homes if â50 [percent] plus oneâ of property owners in their respective neighborhoods agree to its adoption. This policy will hurt future students because most Aggies that live together are not related, even under the new definition of family the city council passed in January.Â Granted, students will not be immediately kicked out if the ROO passes in their neighborhood thanks to a grandfather provision. However, that isnât sufficient to make the ROO a good policy.Â
