Shoppers bought far fewer clothes last year as lockdowns meant people had less opportunity to socialise and go out.
Clothes sales slumped 25%, the biggest drop in 23 years when records began, official figures suggest.
While shops have reported demand for certain clothing such as pyjamas and loungewear has risen, demand for going-out items has fallen sharply.
And despite a pick-up in December, clothing sales remain lower than before the pandemic struck. With few opportunities to socialise during lockdown and many people working from home, the clothing sector has been one of the worst-affected by restrictions , the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.
Clothes sales slump in worst year for shops on record
UK retail sales saw their largest annual fall on record in 2020, driven by a slump in demand for fashion reports the BBC.

WHILE qualifying for the rescheduled Olympic Games is foremost for the national karate team as it begins its training âbubble,â it also has its sights on the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games later this year.
Speaking at Tuesdayâs online Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum, Karate Pilipinas Sports Federation, Inc. President Richard Lim shared that apart from the Olympics, they also have their eyes on the SEA Games in November in Vietnam.
âNovember may still be far, but for an athlete preparing for the SEA Games, thatâs near,â said Mr. Lim, who was one of the guests in the forum along with Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) National Training Director Mark Velasco.
