Since 2007, Richard Montañez has been peddling the feel-good story to end all feel-good stories that as a janitor at a Frito-Lay plant in Rancho Cucamonga, he successfully pitched the company on creating Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. In his telling, after seeing an internal video encouraging all Frito-Lay employees to “act like owners,” he told the CEO that spicy snacks were all the rage in Hispanic neighborhoods, and that they were missing out on a huge market. He also created his own spice blend for executives to try. Of course they were a hit, he rose up to the C-suite, and now he makes a living writing memoirs and being a motivational speaker. He is even going to be portrayed in a new movie, produced by Eva Longoria.

Frito-Lay says Richard Montanez, the man who claimed to have invented Hot Cheetos, fabricated his story and that the popular snack was developed by a team in Texas.
Richard Montañez said he started off as a janitor and ended up an executive after he pitched his spicy flavor idea to company chief executives. HE shared his story with FOX 11’s Rita Garcia in October 2020.

The Los Angeles Times just released an article that is claiming the story it s not entirely true. This is what journalist Sam Dean wrote in his article about Richard Montañez. He interviewed former Frito-Lay employees who worked for the company during that time. Lynne Greenfeld a junior employee was assigned the responsibility of developing the Flamin’ Hot brand after its initial launch in 1989. And she said Richard was not part of the team.
