Almost a month after the conclusion of the 2021 municipal elections, another Coast city is welcoming its newly elected city government this evening.
Billy Hewes took the oath of office as the city of Gulfport’s mayor for the third time tonight at the Centennial Plaza Chapel.
All seven councilmembers were also sworn in, including the lone newcomer Richard Kosloski, who will be representing ward seven.
Following his swearing in, Mayor Hewes reflected on his previous eight years in office and announced his focuses for the next four years: public safety, infrastructure, and economic development.
With two terms under his belt and another one just beginning, Mayor Hewes spoke about why he continues to choose to serve the City of Gulfport. “It’s a calling. Some might call it an affliction. In Gulfport there were four contested races on the ballot, one of which was the mayoral race.
Incumbent Mayor Billy Hewes will be serving his third term as mayor of Mississippi’s second biggest city, defeating Democratic opponent Howard Page after claiming nearly 64% of the vote.
As for the races for city council seats in wards 2,5, and 6, the Republican incumbents swept the elections with Ron Roland, Myles Sharp, and R. Lee Flowers retaining the spots on city council in their respective wards for the next four years.

Primary Runoff elections for Ward 4 and Ward 7 in Gulfport
The winners of each race have no challengers in the general elections.

Incumbent Ward 4 Councilman Rusty Walker is facing Derek Bullock after Walker received just under a majority of the vote in the primaries with 49.83% while Bullock reeled in 39.55% of the vote.
Over in Ward 7, incumbent Cara Pucheu is going up against Richard Kosloski after Pucheu received 44.44% of the vote and Kosloski secured 34.64% following the four-way primary race earlier in April.

Former volleyball coach charged with sexually assaulting a player
Mark Kosloski was a coach at North Lakes Academy for six years, resigning in February for personal reasons.

A former assistant volleyball coach in Forest Lake is accused of sexually assaulting one of his players in 2017, when she was 17.
Mark Richard Kosloski, 47, of Wyoming, Minnesota, is charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in connection to the assaults on a North Lakes Academy student at his home during the fall of 2017.
Kosloski worked as the assistant volleyball coach at North Lakes Academy, a charter school in Forest Lake, from 2017-2018 and as the head boys basketball coach from November 2015 until he resigned on Feb. 2, citing personal reasons, North Lakes Academy Executive Director Cam Stottler told Bring Me The News. Kosloski s resignation came the same day the victim contacted police about the sexual assaults.
