A second case of covid-19 associated with the South African genetic variant has been detected in Portugal, according to data from the Ricardo Jorge National Institute, which indicates that the circulation of this variant is still “limited” in the country.
“To date, two cases of the variant associated with South Africa have been detected, and no case of this variant has been detected from 10 to 19 January, which suggests that the circulation of this variant is still limited in Portugal”, says the latest status report on the genetic diversity of the SARS-CoV-2 from INSA, published on 8 February on its website.

About 85,500 babies were born in Portugal in 2020, the lowest figure since 2015, the year 85,056 heel prick tests were conducted.
According to data released by the Ricardo Jorge National Institute of Health (INSA), last year, 85,456 newborns were studied, 1,908 fewer babies than in 2019 (87,364), under the National Neonatal Screening Program (PNRN), which covers almost all births in Portugal. Compared to 2015, the year in which 85,056 babies were screened, the lowest number in the last five years was a drop of 0.48 percent in 2020, representing 400 fewer births, according to INSA.
